Local Government Records

The State Records Office holds a great many records of various municipal councils. Of these the most important to the genealogical researcher would be the rate books. Early rate books listed occupiers as well as owners of dwellings. To locate rate books relating to various councils consult the Government Archives Agency Index under the name of the council. This will provide an agency number (AN) from the Series Registration System, or do a search under the name of the local authority on the State Records Office Catalogue. The appropriate listing of records can then be checked to see if any rate books are held and the time period.
Please consult the State Records Office webpage on Local Government Records for more details.
