Western Australian marriage index, 1829-1896 [microform].
Bayswater, W.A : Western Australian Genealogical Society, 1991 [929.39 BOW]

The Western Australian Marriage Index (WAMI) links together brides and grooms from various marriage records and indexes. The major source of reference was the 1841-1896 index produced by the Registrar General's Office. In this index there was no cross referencing between marriage partners and the WAMI sought to rectify that (however, the Registrar General's Office Pioneer Index 1841-1905 does now provide this cross referencing).

The WAMI is divided into three parts. The first is arranged by Year/Certificate number and provides information such as date of wedding, place of wedding, name of bride and groom, ages and marital status (listed as B=Bachelor, S=Spinster, W=Widow or Widower, D=Divorced, B1/S1=First marriage, W2=Widowed and Second Marriage), sometimes names of parents including maiden name and references (01=Anglican Register, 02=Roman Catholic Register, 04=Wesleyan Register, 35=Registrar General's Office, 36=Other Civil Registration, 50=Newspaper Reference, 67=Biographical Dictionary, 68=Printed Family Source).

The second and third parts are a grooms and brides index which provides the name of the groom or bride, the year/certificate number and the name of the spouse.

The WAMI contains details on approximately 11,500 marriages. Marriages taking place before registration began in 1841 have been given a PR (for Pre Registration) number and a four digit number indicating the year and month (i.e., PR 3707 would indicate a marriage in July 1837). Marriages which took place after Civil registration, but do not appear to have a registration number have been given a NR (for Non Registration) number and a four digit number indicating year and month (i.e., NR 6708 would indicate a non-registered marriage in August 1867). The WAMI also attempts to show variations in the spelling of surnames, as many mistakes occur in the Registrar General's Office index as to spelling, registration numbers and omissions.

Registrar General's Office Indexes to Birth, Death and Marriage Certificates
The Registration Act, which provided for the civil registration of births, deaths and marriages, was passed on 27 May 1841. The Registrar General's Office began recording births, deaths and marriages from 9 September 1841. The Registrar General’s Office has produced a series of microfiche indexes, which are divided into several parts as follows: births 1841-1880, 1881-1895, 1896-1901 and 1902-1905; deaths 1841-1896, 1897-1905, and then each year until 1980 (note 1906-1916 divided into males and females, 1917-1980 one list); and marriages 1841-1896, 1897-1905 and then each year until 1965 (note 1906-1916 divided into males and females, 1917-1965 one list).

Entry into all parts is by the name of the person registered as being born, married or died. Each part, which is arranged alphabetically by surname, gives the name of the person, the district or town in which the event was registered, certificate number and year, and sex. There is no cross referencing in the microfiche indexes, so marriage partners, parents and next of kin etc., cannot be ascertained from any individual entry.

After this series came the Western Australian Pioneers Index 1841-1905. This lists all registered births, deaths and marriages for this period. For a birth, the surname, given names, name of father and mother (including maiden name), place of birth and year of birth and registration number are provided. For a death, the surname, given names, age at time of death, name of father and mother (including maiden name), place of birth and death and year of death and registration number are provided. For a marriage, surname, given names, name of spouse, place of marriage and year of marriage and registration number are given. The Pioneers Index is on microfiche and is also available on CD-ROM.

The Registrar General’s Office has also placed the Pioneers Index 1841-1905 online and has extended its coverage, births and marriages now up to 1932 and deaths up to 1962. However, the information for entries after 1905 may not be as comprehensive as for those before 1906 eg for a birth, parents’ names are not given. For marriages 1933-1965 and deaths 1953-1980, the original microfiche indexes can still be used.
