Find Journals

The State Library of Western Australia collects over 6,000 current journal and newspaper titles, as well as maintaining a large collection of older defunct titles.  The library also provides access to a large number of e-journals in the State Library.  Some are available to public library members from home.

TITLE SEARCH

The easiest way to find a journal or magazine is to do a title search on the State Library’s catalogue, available on any computer in the library or online at www.slwa.wa.gov.au.

Search by Title:

  • Click Search our catalogue
  • Click Search the Main Catalogue
  • Click Title
  • Type the name of the journal in the Title Search box eg “Limelight”
  • Click Search
  • If there too may titles of the same name click Limit/Sort Search (top left)
  • Click SERIAL in the Monograph/SERIAL/Index: box (middle)
  • Click Submit (bottom left)
  • Select the title that most closely matches by clicking on the underlined title
  • Scroll through the records by selecting Previous Page or Next Page
  • Click Return to Browse if you wish to view your original list.

Find the Journal on the Shelf:

  • Read the information in the Location box which has the floor number for the State Library eg 2nd Fl, Music Serial and the call number eg 791.4475 LIM.  The call number is created using the Dewey Classification system and the first three letters of the journal’s title.
  • Write down the call number
  • Find the journal on the shelves arranged in Dewey order
  • Please note music journals are organised by title.

If the Journal is in Stack

  • If the Location box says Ser (Serial) Stack please click Request (top left)
  • Type the volume, number and year of the journal issues in the first box
  • Type your name; date you want to read the journal; and telephone or email address in the second box
  • Click Submit
  • If your request was successful you will receive a message Your request was successful
  • The journal issues will be fetched for you and delivered to the enquiry desk of the floor that the item is held.

KEYWORD SEARCH

Keyword searching searches almost anywhere in the catalogue record eg subject, author, title, summary but not publisher or place of publication.

Search by Keyword: 

  • Click Search our Catalogue
  • Click Search the Main Catalogue
  • Click Keyword
  • Type words you know eg words from the title or the subject of the journal
  • Click SERIAL in the Monograph/SERIAL/Index: box (middle)
  • Click Submit search (bottom left)
  • Select the title that most closely matches by clicking on the underlined title
  • If you see another list of records select the title again that most closely matches by clicking on the underlined title
  • Scroll through the records by selecting Previous Page or Next Page
  • Click Return to Browse if you wish to view your original list.
  • To complete your search, follow the steps from Find the Journal on the Shelf as above.
