Borrowing Music and Scripts

Western Australian individuals and organisations may borrow music scores, play scripts and music audio cassettes directly from the State Library collections. If you live in the Perth metropolitan area you may register and borrow directly from the second floor service desk in State Library. Extensive information about the music collections can be found here.

Membership to the State Library is free of charge. If you are under the age of 14, you may join the library if your parent or guardian provides suitable identification and countersigns your application form. You may borrow a total of eight items at any one time. Books, magazines, Long Play and CD recordings are not available for loan but may be used within the State Library.

Register as a member

To register as member of the State Library you must:

  1. Live in the Perth metropolitan area
  2. Visit the second floor service desk within the State Library
  3. Show identification and proof of your current residential address
  4. Provide details for a contact person (friend or relative) that lives in Perth but at a different residential address to yours

If you live in regional Western Australia or in the eastern states you may borrow from our collections through your local public library. Please see the section below entitled Borrowing music, plays and cassettes from our collections through your local public library for further information.

Loan periods for music and performing arts

  • Music scores (sheet music) – 4 weeks
  • Orchestral (performing) sets – 3 months
  • Music cassettes – 4 weeks
  • Play scripts – 4 weeks
  • Play script sets – 3 months

Renewing loans

Your loans may be renewed up to two times. You can arrange renewals of your loans via telephone, email, by visiting us with the items you want to renew or by accessing your online library record. Please note that renewals will not be possible for items that have been reserved by another client. 

Returning music and performing arts items borrowed from us

  • You are responsible for all items on your library card
  • Items must be returned to the second floor service desk
  • All items must be returned prior to or on their due date
  • Do not return your items by post or to a public library

Late returns

Two courtesy notices will be issued to you if you forget to return the items on time. Items not returned will incur an invoice for their replacement cost and a non-refundable $38.30 administrative fee. If you return an item after you have been invoiced you will only have to pay the $38.30 administrative fee.

Reserving an item

If the item you want to borrow is on loan you may ask staff to reserve it for you. As soon as the item is returned you will be contacted and asked to collect the item from the second floor service desk within seven days. If you do not collect the item within seven days it will be made available for other clients to borrow.

Requesting items from the stacks (staff areas)

Requests for these items can be made at the second floor service desk, via telephone, through our online requests service and Askus, our online reference service.

Damaged items

Any item that is damaged or destroyed whilst checked out to you will incur an invoice for the replacement cost for the item, and a non-refundable administration fee of $38.30.

Borrowing music, plays and cassettes from our collections through your local public library

Music scores and plays from our collections are available for interlibrary loan through your local public library. Items requested and borrowed from our collections via your public library must be returned to your public library.
