General Histories

The State Library holds some good general histories of Western Australia. A small selection can be found below and others can be located in the State Library Catalogue.

Land of Vision and Mirage : Western Australia since 1826 / by Geoffrey Bolton.
The most recent general history of WA, this provides an excellent up-to-date summary of the State by its pre-eminent modern historian.

Australia's Western Third : a History of Western Australia from the First Settlements to Modern Times / by F.K. Crowley
Published in 1960 and reprinted in 1970, F.K. Crowley's book provides a good general history of WA.

A New History of Western Australia / edited by C.T. Stannage
Published in 1981, it contains chapters from a diverse variety of authors writing about WA's history from different aspects such as economic, social, political, etc.

Western Australia : a History From Its Discovery to the Inauguration of the Commonwealth / by J. S. Battye
Published in 1924 and as a facsimile in 1978, Battye's book provides a good general history of WA in the 1800s.

The Cyclopedia of Western Australia : an Historical and Commercial Review : Descriptive and Biographical Facts, Figures and Illustrations : an Epitome of Progress / edited by J.S. Battye
Published in 1912-1913 and as a facsimile in 1985, Battye's book provides general history plus sections on the history of towns, stations, businesses, etc. and biographies of leading citizens.

History of West Australia : a Narrative of Her Past, Together with Biographies of Her Leading Men / compiled by W.B. Kimberly
Published in 1897, Kimberly's book provides a history of WA in the 1800s plus biographies of leading citizens.

Twentieth Century Impressions of Western Australia
Published in 1901 it provides a general history of WA in the 1800s plus histories of towns, stations, businesses, etc. and biographies of leading citizens.

A Story of a Hundred Years : Western Australia, 1829-1929 / edited by Sir Hal Colebatch
Published in 1929 for WA's centenary, Hal Colebatch's book provides a good general history of WA in its first hundred years of existence.

Swan River Booklets. Nos. 1-12 : the Early Story of Western Australia / by Cygnet
Published in 1935, Cygnet's booklets provide a history of 12 different aspects of WA's formative years.

The History of the North West of Australia : Embracing Kimberley, Gascoyne and Murchison Districts : Illustrated / edited by J. S. Battye
Published in 1915 and as a facsimile in 1985, Battye's book provides an early history of the north west of WA, together with details of exploration, histories of stations and biographies of prominent people in the north west.

Western Australia, a Potted History, 1616-1870s / A.E. Williams
Published in 1979, William's book provides a brief history of the early years of WA.
