News from the brussel sprout of the culture world

The State Library has a lot in common with the brussel sprout. Ugly on the outside, amazingly unique on the inside. Often overlooked as a place rich in culture and art. You might be surprised to discover that we aren't nearly as bad as you once thought, we are rich in resources with collections that are unique to Western Australia. In fact, we are an essential member of the art, culture and history family. We play a key role in ensuring the health of a wise, knowledgeable and democratic society.  We even have an extensive art collection including works by Robert Juniper and Howard Taylor.

What's here:

Equipment

Aside from the fleet of PCs and photocopiers on all floors, we welcome the ST200X microform scanner printers. What?!? These machines convert microfilm to an electronic file. In essence they can do almost anything except make your breakfast!

** If you're unsure about exactly what microfilm is, you might want to consider attending a free tour held on the first Tuesdays of every month.

Digitised British Newspapers from the 17th, 18th and 19th Century

Be one of the first to view 300 years of British history as it happened. You can keyword search, copy and print 19th century British Library Newspapers and 17th & 18th Century Burney Collection Newspapers.

This resource is only available from within the State Library.

 Top 5 tips and tricks

  1. Place a plain post-it note in the centre of the screen when using microfilm readers. This helps to stop motion sickness.
  2. If you can't find what you're looking for don't assume we don't have it.
  3. Need to request an item? Go on-line and make the request via our catalogue from home to save time.
  4. Bring pencils! This may seem like an odd tip, but you can only bring pencils into the Reading Room. No pens. No pencil cases. No bags. No water. No phone. Just you, your pencil and your brain.
  5. If you don't know, ASK. If you still don't know, ask again.

Spotlight on ... Researcher's Tickets

This month we examine the humble and somewhat ancient art of obtaining a Researcher's Ticket at the State Library of Western Australia.

**Each State Library will have similar, but not the same process for obtaining a Researcher's Ticket.

Believe it or not, but some things just aren't available electronically, and some of these may be fragile, rare, at risk or heritage material.  When the item you want to use is any of these things it's time to get a Researcher's Ticket (even if you're not researching).

Who can apply for a ticket?

Currently, ANYONE over the age of 18 who can provide the library with identification and a contactable referee can apply . The referee can be a lecturer, parent or friend over the age of 18.

How?

Apply at the Battye reference desk on the third floor. Bring proof of your current address AND details of at least one other adult who can act as a referee on your behalf.

Cost?
