Education Programs

The State Library of Western Australia education programs cater for all students in years 8 to 12. Our programs complement the Curriculum Framework and may be adapted to suit the needs of your students. All education programs at the State Library are free of charge.

Programs generally run for an hour, and can be complemented with an excursion to the Western Australian Museum or the Art Gallery of Western Australia.

Secondary Education Programs

Adopt-A-Grave (Yrs 9 and 10) 

Adopt-A-Grave with The National Trust Australia (WA) and State Library of WA is a collaborative program focusing on East Perth Cemeteries. Students will develop an appreciation for WA’s heritage through community service, developing research skills, and website materials.

Available during terms 2 and 3 only.

More Than Just Books (Yrs 8 to 10)

One hour interactive tour introduces students to some of the Library’s unexpected resources including maps, microfilm and hidden treasures. Great as a general introduction to some of the collections in the State Library.

SEaK: Search Engage and Know (Yrs 8 to 12)

Take the challenge! Learn to search like a librarian. This hands-on session will assist students to improve their electronic searching skills to find the best resource for the right information.

Students in years 11 and 12 might be eligible to participate in SEaK advanced. Contact the Education Officer for more information. 

Special Events

The State Library education program often hosts a number of special events for school groups throughout the year including; National Simultaneous Story Time, Book Week and Make Your Own Story Book Exhibition, variety of author and illustrator events, NAIDOC week, National Literacy and Numeracy week and Indigenous Literacy Day.

Self Guided Visits

School groups are welcome to visit the library for unguided experiences. Please visit  What's On  for current exhibitions and events.

We strongly encourage all school groups to contact the library prior to their visit, even if they do not require a guide or other educational services.

Australia/ New Zealand Reference Centre

Good source of full text international and national magazines, newspaper and reference books. Includes biographies, image collection, maps and links to the video Encyclopedia of the 20th Century.

Business Source Elite

This business resource provides coverage in all areas of business including marketing, management, accounting, finance and economics as well as national and international company profiles and Datamonitor reports.

Encourage students to join their public library for free access to these resources from home or a public library.

Please be aware that access to online databases from other than the library or home, that is schools and universities is not permitted under the licence agreements held between the Library and Vendors.
