Significant Collection of Durack Papers Go To The State Library

Following negotiations with the Durack family, Dame Mary Durack’s literary and personal papers and the Durack Family Historical Archives will now be housed at the State Library of Western Australia.  Dame Mary is renowned internationally for her books Kings in Grass Castles, Sons in the Saddle, The Rock and the Sand and a life of Eliza Shaw a Swan River Pioneer amongst other works.

In the Line of Duty is a timeline of important moments in police history presented through documents, images and objects held in police archives and museums, libraries and private collections around the country. In the Line of Duty looks at the wide range of duties that police undertake, from dangerous criminal investigations to community policing, and everything in between.
Wanted: Australia's Missing Newspapers

If there’s a stack of old newspapers gathering dust under the bed or out in the shed, the State Library of Western Australia wants to know about it. The search is on for these valuable pieces of our social history, with the State Library of Western Australia part of the Australian Newspaper Plan (ANPlan), a nation-wide initiative of state and territory libraries designed to find, collect and preserve access to historic newspapers.

Free Program of Tours and Workshops @ Your State Library

The State Library of Western Australia is pleased to announce the 2008 program of interactive tours and workshops for school and community members of all ages. All activities are free. Highlighting the Library’s extensive collections and resources, including the J S Battye Library of West Australian History, these free tours and seminars can be for general information or to support more structured learning.

Tumble Books On-line Reading Made Easy for WA Kids

Western Australian kids can now join millions of children worldwide reading interactive books on-line. Free access to the delightful collection of on-line animated and talking books is as simple as logging on to the Better Beginnings Family Literacy Program or State Library website. To celebrate this new electronic resource provided by the State Library and Better Beginnings, a multi-award winning program supported by Rio Tinto WA Future Fund, it will be unveiled and demonstrated for the first time during the Perth International Arts Festival Family Day Event on the 24th February.
Historical Records Rescue Consortium

Uncovering Hidden Treasures at the State Library

Visitors to the State Library are now able to rediscover WA’s past thanks to a new exhibit and tours showcasing the remarkable work of the Historical Records Rescue Consortium. The exhibition, To the Rescue! celebrates the achievements, milestones and struggles faced in saving these unique records, many of which date back to the mid 1800’s. Now visitors to the Library can participate in behind the scenes tours that bring to life many of the rescued treasures.

Historical Records Rescue Consortium Exhibition 05 January - 27 February 2008

A celebration of the milestones met and achievements of the Historical Records Rescue Consortium (HRRC) project go on public display at the State Library of Western Australia from 5 January – 27 February 2008. The exhibition details the processes used to ensure that WA’s past history is accessible today and preserved for the future. Entry is free.
