The State Library publishes datasets created from bibliographic data stored in its catalogues, digitised heritage data from the collections and statistical data collected as part of library operations.  Several data sets have been made available on the data.wa.gov.au website.

These datasets are:

The datasets are released under a Creative Commons Attribution License (cc-by).  Anyone is welcome to make use of these datasets for research, visualisation, re-telling WA stories and anything else you can think of. Please share the results with us if you do.  Here are some ways State Library's data has been used so far:

  • WAGS WABI database - The Western Australian Biographical Index has recently been transcribed and made available.
  • Colourful Past - Using the SLWA Digital Photographic Collection dataset, “Colourful Past” was a channel to browse recorded in library or archive imagery and add colour to historical photos.
  • WA Public Housing -  website - Using the “Western Australia Public Library Network” dataset, this project mapped areas across WA to help inform where to build public housing.
  • iHero - Using the “Adopt a soldier” dataset, a web application was created that uses facial recognition to search Australian service photos across various conflicts as captured by the State Library of Western Australia, Australian War Memorial, National Archives of Australia and the State Library of Queensland.
  • Put a bird on it - description - Using the “Bird Songs Online” dataset, this project created ringtones and notifications using native fauna.

Contact the State Library’s Data and Discovery team to request further datasets, to show us what you have built or give feedback on the sets currently on offer.
