Film Screenings

The State Library regularly presents film screenings in the comfortable surroundings of the Alexander Library Building theatre.

Wednesday Matinee

The Wednesday Matinee features films and videos from the collections held by the State Library. Screenings usually run for about 60 minutes.

Fourteen rats and a rat catcher        1982  (10 min)
An animated story about an old lady who hires a rat catcher to rid her house of a family of rats but there's a twist in the tale.

Island at the end of the world           2003 (47 min)
A modern day expedition sets out to follow the same route over South Georgia as taken by Shackleton after his ill-fated expedition to the Antarctic in 1915.

Where they flew and where they fell  1989 (60 min)
This film takes the viewer to a wide range of aviation sites important to the history of World War I. Filmed in northern France it also investigates where Richthofen and Mick Mannock crashed.

Margaret Atwood: Once in August   1984 (57 min)
Interviews Canadian author Margaret Atwood while on vacation on an isolated island in Canada with her family.

A selection of short films from the State Film Archives

The Capricorn contract     1969  (27 min)
A promotional film showing the construction of the 265 mile Mount  Whaleback-Port Hedland railway for the Mt Newman Mining Company. Also includes footage of Aboriginal rock paintings and open cut iron-ore mining.
Growing wild    1999 (27min)
A documentary about wildflower production for the export market, featuring Ulstrup Estate Wildflower Farm, run by Luke and Josh Ulstrup. 

December/January

No screenings. We take a break over the summer holiday period. The Wednesday Film Matinee will resume on Wednesday 3 February. Program details will be available mid-January.
