Probate

Index to grants of probate and grants of letters of administration. Consignment 3435, 1832-1939 [microform]
[Perth, W.A.] : Library Board of W.A., [199-]. [929.39 WES]

Probate records (including wills) and letters of administration (drawn up when a person dies intestate) are held in the State Records Office for 1832-1947. While probate files relating to wills and letters of administration are restricted for 75 years, the registers which contain the copy of the document are available for public use.

The index to probate records is in two formats. The first is on microfiche and covers 1832-c1939. It provides the full name of the deceased, date of death and date of grant of probate, name of executors (where there is a will) and administrators (where there is no will), and probate or administration number. With this information it is then possible to access the documents, which are microfilmed.

The second index is on microfilm at CONS 5269 and covers 1900-1993. The majority of entries are between 1940-1993 and it is a continuation of the first index. The index shows the person's full name, date and place of death and late address and the probate or administration number (usually indicated by a prefix P or A). Other letters are used before the number in some cases and an explanation can be found in Record Series 1766. The registers and files for probate and administration after 1947 are held at the Probate Office.
