Join the Library! Membership at the State Library of Western Australia is free for all residents of WA. As a member, you can borrow books and other items from our collection and access a range of eBooks and other electronic resources.

If you are not a Western Australian resident, you can still join the Library to use our computers and access electronic resources on State Library computers within the building. You can also request a visiting researcher's membership.

Your State Library membership entitles you to a wide range of free services and access to the rich heritage collections of Western Australia. Please consider making a donation to support State Library programs.

Members must agree to the Terms and Conditions of Membership.

Members under the age of 18 require the signature of a parent or guardian.

All clients must accept the following terms and conditions of membership of the State Library of Western Australia (the Library) before their application for membership will be confirmed.

Any person that wishes to join the Library will provide the following personal information:

  1. Name
  2. Address (for Western Australian residents who cannot provide a current address, alternative arrangements can be made to become a member)
  3. Email address
  4. Phone and or mobile number

Members will:

  1. Create, manage and keep secure a password for their account.
  2. Not share their account details and password with any other member of the public.
  3. Immediately notify the Library if they believe there has been unauthorised access to their account.

The Library will:

  1. Contact affected members directly if they become aware that there has been unauthorised access to private information and let them know what information has been compromised.

Members will:

  1. Take responsibility for the physical condition and timely return of all items borrowed from the Library. The Library reserves the right to deny borrowing privileges to members who do not return borrowed items, or if items are returned in poor condition.
  2. Return all items borrowed from the Library on or before the due date with the understanding that different formats of library items may have different loan periods prescribed.
    • A courtesy notice will be emailed or posted three days before the item is due.
    • An overdue notice will be sent one week after the due date informing the member that overdue items may mean a suspension of their borrowing privileges.
    • A second overdue notice will be sent two weeks after the item due date informing the member that overdue items may mean a suspension of their borrowing privileges.
  3. Examine all items prior to borrowing and bring damaged items to the attention of staff prior to borrowing.
  4. If less than 18 years of age, provide signed consent from a parent or guardian before library membership is granted. The parent(s) or guardian(s) who provides signed consent shall take responsibility for items on all membership cards issued to children in their care.
  5. Notify the Library if their membership card is lost, stolen or has been compromised in any way. The client to whom the card was issued or the parent or guardian who provided signed consent shall retain liability for any items loaned prior to such notification.
  6. Notify the Library in the event of changes to all or part of their name, address, telephone number or email address given at the time of membership registration.

Members will:

  1. Not damage or modify equipment, software, or data belonging to the Library, nor attempt to violate computer network security. The Library reserves the right to deny access to public computers if a client deliberately misuses Library equipment.
  2. Not attempt to disrupt other users of the service.
  3. Only download files to their own external drives. The Library takes no responsibility for data altered or deleted on external drives through the public network.
  4. Not intentionally access material that is offensive or objectionable to other members of the public or staff. The Library has a duty under the State Classification (Publications, Films and Computer Games) Enforcement Act 1996 and to the Commonwealth Classification (Publications, Films and Computer Games) Act 1995 to ensure that material of this nature is not displayed in the Library.
  5. Not intentionally misuse Library facilities or fail to comply with staff directives on the use of Library services. All Library facilities are to be used in a responsible manner, taking into consideration the laws on copyright, privacy, harassment and libel. Clients who fail to do so may have their membership suspended or revoked.
  6. Not intentionally distribute copyrighted material without the permission of the copyright owner. Repeated violation of this condition may lead to a client’s membership being revoked.
  7. Understand that the Library reserves the right to monitor and log the use of computers. Information regarding the use of computers may be made available upon legal demand.
  8. Understand that the internet services provided are secure as far as reasonably practical.
  9. Understand that access to some types of internet content may be restricted, including gambling websites, peer to peer file sharing services and pornography.
  10. Understand that the Library has no control over the accuracy, authority, timeliness or usefulness of the information accessed on the internet and will not be liable for any damages related to the use of the information accessed.
  11. Acknowledge that the Library cannot guarantee access to computers. Clients must finish all online activity by the end of each booked computer session, save work to their personal drives and ensure that any password protected sites have been logged out. The Library will not be liable for any data loss or damages related to clients not finalising, saving their data and logging out before the end of each booked computer session.

Members will:

  1. Comply with the terms and conditions of license agreements between publishers and the Library when accessing eresources and online databases.
  2. Use eresources only for private study or research purposes and not for business, commercial or work purposes.
  3. Recognise that use is for the registered State Library member only and that access is not transferable.
  4. Not distribute or provide links to eresources and online databases provided by the Library to third parties.

Members agree to receiving information, including emails, from the State Library about library services and events. Members can opt out of receiving this information at any time.

By accepting these terms and conditions of membership, members will be subject to the following penalties:

  • Where a borrowed item is lost, rendered unusable or otherwise destroyed, the member may have their borrowing privileges suspended.
  • Further breaches may result in the member being refused access to library services or have their membership revoked.
  • Where a member intentionally distributes copyrighted material without the permission of the copyright owner, the member may have their membership revoked.
  • Where any deliberate breaches of these Terms and Conditions of Membership occur, the member will be reminded of their agreement to adhere to the Terms and Conditions of Membership at the time they became a member of the Library and may have their membership suspended.

Members understand that these Terms and Conditions of Membership may change and an email will be sent to members and information placed on the Library’s website to inform clients of any such changes. If a member does not agree to the changes advised, they may cancel their membership.
 

  1. Card shall mean a State Library of Western Australia membership card.
  2. Child shall mean any person who is under 18 years of age.
  3. Library shall mean State Library of Western Australia.
  4. Client shall mean a person who uses the State Library in person or online.
  5. Member shall mean any client who has registered for membership with the State Library; or a person, including parents or guardians who have provided signed consent for children under the age of 18 years.
  6. Due Date shall mean the date recorded by Library when a loaned item is required to be returned to the Library.
  7. Objectionable material shall be defined by the Classification (Publications, Films and Computer Games) Enforcement Act 1996.
  8. Restricted material shall be defined in the Classification (Publications, Films and Computer Games) Enforcement Act 1996.
  9. Responsibility shall mean the client is accountable or liable for his or her own actions and of those children under the age of 18 years in their care.

If you wish to borrow physical items from the library, proof of identity will be required at the time of your first loan. For example:

  • Western Australian driver's licence
  • Utility bill
  • Health Care Card/Pensioner Card from Centrelink

For children under the age of 18, we require proof of Western Australian residency for a parent or guardian, as well as a completed and signed parent/guardian consent form presented at the Welcome Desk.

If you wish to use computers and print, copy, scan services only we need to see ID with your name. We will also ask for a contact method, such as your phone number or email address.

Your membership card is valid for five years.

Many items from the State Library collection are available for loan to library members.
